Crochet Anemone Flower Pattern | Free Easy Step-by-Step Tutorial

Make a crochet anemone with layered petals, a textured black centre, a fringe of stamens and wired green leaves. This free written pattern covers the individual pieces and shows how to assemble them into a flower stem.

Use your anemone as a single-flower display or the focal bloom in a handmade bouquet. Our free crochet flower and leaf pattern directory offers more pieces to make alongside it.

Red crochet anemone on a wrapped stem

Choose red, purple, cream, pink or magenta petals to suit your arrangement. A contrasting centre helps the layers stand out.

Crochet anemone with a black and cream centre
Before you start: This is an intermediate project with shaped petals, a clustered centre, cut-loop fringe and wired assembly. Make one petal first to check its size and firmness. For a separate floral blanket project, explore our downloadable flower and botanical crochet PDF patterns.

Materials

  • Yarn: cotton yarn in your chosen petal colour, black for the centre and stamen strips, cream for the embroidered centre details, and green for the leaves and stem.
  • Crochet hook: 2.5 mm as a starting point; adjust for your yarn and tension.
  • Flower rods: 2 rods, each approximately 40 cm long and 2 mm in diameter, used together to support the flower.
  • Thin floral wire: approximately 0.4 mm in diameter for the petals and leaves.
  • Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch marker, pliers and wire cutters.
  • Hot glue and a glue gun for assembly.

Choose yarn that produces firm but workable stitches. Keep cut wire ends covered and handle hot glue carefully.

Difficulty, Gauge and Pattern Notes

Skill level: intermediate. This project uses basic crochet stitches, increases, clusters, loop stitches, embroidery and assembly around a supported stem.

Gauge: no fixed gauge is required for this decorative flower. Yarn weight, hook size and tension affect the finished size. Use the same yarn and hook for all ten petals.

Crochet anemone arranged with roses
  • This pattern uses US crochet terminology.
  • Unless stated otherwise, work one stitch into each of the next stitches. For example, sc 3 means one single crochet in each of the next three stitches.
  • Instructions in parentheses followed by “in the next stitch” are all worked into that one stitch.
  • Joining slip stitches and starting chains do not count in the round totals given below.
  • Petals and leaves are worked around both sides of a foundation chain. Rotate the piece at the end of the chain to work along its opposite side.
  • Fasten off each finished piece and leave a tail where needed for assembly.

Stitches and Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • ss: slip stitch
  • st / sts: stitch / stitches
  • CL: a two-double-crochet cluster worked into one stitch, as described below
  • R: round
  • [ ]: stitch count at the end of the round or row

Two-Double-Crochet Cluster: CL

Yarn over, insert the hook into the indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through two loops. Two loops remain on the hook. Repeat these steps in the same stitch; three loops remain. Yarn over and pull through all three loops to complete one cluster.

This centre uses two unfinished double crochets joined at the top. Each completed cluster counts as one stitch.

Secured Loop Stitch for the Stamen Fringe

Use a secured loop stitch to create fringe that can be cut. Insert the hook into the next stitch. Hold a loop of working yarn around your finger, about 2 cm long from its base to its bend. Catch both strands around your finger and pull them through the stitch, leaving the long loop behind the work. With three loops on the hook, yarn over with the strand leading to the yarn ball and pull through all three. Release your finger.

Keep the long fringe loop separate from the active loop on your hook. Finish and secure the strip before cutting the fringe.

Assemble the Crochet Anemone

Check Your Pieces

Anemone petals, centre, stamens and leaves
  • 10 petals
  • 1 black flower centre
  • 2 black stamen strips
  • 6 green leaves
  • 2 flower rods for the supported stem
  • Green wrapping yarn, cream embroidery yarn and hot glue

Step 1: Prepare the Stem Support

Using pliers, bend approximately 2 cm at the top of each flower rod into a hook. Position the rods together to support the same flower head.

Bending the tops of the flower rods

Step 2: Attach the Black Centre

Fit the black centre over the bent tops of the rods. Secure it with a small amount of hot glue and use its yarn tail to help hold the base in place.

Steps 3–4: Attach Both Stamen Strips

Wrap the first black stamen strip around the centre with the fringe pointing outward. Glue the lower edge in place. Wrap and secure the second strip in the same way, adjusting the fringe so it surrounds the centre evenly.

Step 5: Attach the First Petal Layer

Arrange five petals around the base of the centre. Bend each petal's wire at its base to fit around the stem support. Check the spacing, then secure the bases with small amounts of glue.

Step 6: Attach the Second Petal Layer

Arrange the remaining five petals around the outside, positioning them between the first layer's petals. Secure the bases and gently curve the petals outward.

Step 7: Cover the Flower Base

Wrap green yarn around the base of the flower and down the rods. Cover exposed attachment wires and yarn tails, keeping the wrapping snug.

Step 8: Attach the Leaves

Position the six leaves along the middle section of the stem, grouping them as you prefer. Secure their bases with their wire and yarn tails, then cover the attachments with green wrapping yarn.

Step 9: Finish the Stem

Continue wrapping green yarn down the supported stem. Cover all cut wire ends and secure the final yarn end with glue.

Step 10: Add the Cream Centre Details

Thread a tapestry needle with cream yarn. Bring the needle up near the edge of the black centre. Wrap the yarn around the needle three times, hold the wraps close to the fabric, and insert the needle into a nearby spot. Pull through gently to form a small raised knot.

Repeat around the centre to create a ring of cream details, then secure the yarn on the underside.

Check that the flower head and leaf attachments are secure. Gently adjust the petals and fringe until you are happy with the shape.

Colour and Bouquet Ideas

Try purple petals with a dark centre, cream petals with black stamens, or a brighter red and green combination. Make one petal in your chosen yarn before committing to all ten.

Pair the anemone with smaller flowers and greenery from our free crochet bouquet pattern directory. Leave some space around the bloom so its layered petals and contrasting centre remain visible.

Remove dust gently with a soft brush. Consider the yarn care instructions and the wire and glue in the finished flower before cleaning it.
