KATHWOOL JOURNAL · Updated November 4, 2026
There is no reliable universal number of skeins for a mosaic crochet blanket. Chart size, yarn, tension, method and border all matter. Use the selected pattern’s measuring panel and calculate each color separately.
Start with the pattern’s worksheet
Kathwool’s listed Tips & Yarn Estimation guide uses a weighed 20 by 20 panel for the chosen technique. Its calculation includes the side stitches, an adjustable border allowance, CUT row tails where applicable and extra yarn. Use the supplied worksheet rather than scaling an unrelated plain square by blanket area alone.
The sample quantities shown in product descriptions are examples with stated assumptions. Replace those assumptions with your own measurements. A yarn weight name such as DK does not specify how many meters you use per stitch.
Keep a separate line for each color
Record the yarn used for A and B during the measuring panel as directed. Also record the yarn label’s length and weight. Different colors do not necessarily use equal quantities, and the border may use more of one color.
| Input | Your project note |
|---|---|
| Technique and method | Mosaic or Tapestry; CUT or NO-CUT |
| Measured sample use | Grams of A and grams of B |
| Yarn label | Meters or yards per ball; ball weight |
| Finishing | Border choice and applicable tails |
| Extra allowance | Check whether the worksheet already includes it |
Convert the estimate into whole balls
Suppose your completed worksheet gives 730 g of A and 620 g of B, including its allowances. With 100 g balls of that same yarn, round up to eight balls of A and seven of B. Do not combine the totals and divide them between the colors afterward.
If ordering by length, use the same unit on both sides. For example, 2,190 meters needed ÷ 300 meters per ball = 7.3 balls, rounded up to eight. This is a conversion example, not a requirement for a particular design.
Check the total before ordering
Verify that you have not added a border or safety allowance twice. Check dye lots and availability, then keep the calculation with the labels. If the cost or quantity is beyond your plan, compare a smaller chart before committing to the project.
Convert sample weight into meters before buying
Suppose a correctly scaled calculation gives 650 g of color A before allowances. If its label states 300 m per 100 g, that represents 1,950 m. Adding a hypothetical 10% reserve gives 2,145 m, requiring 8 balls of 300 m when rounded up.
Calculate color B independently. Add border and CUT-tail allowances where needed, checking what the pattern’s calculator already includes. The example demonstrates units and rounding; it is not a yarn requirement for every 240-stitch blanket. Measure the selected technique’s sample and replace all example values with your own.
