A useful mosaic blanket swatch answers three questions: how large your stitches are, how much yarn the chosen method uses and whether you like the fabric. A plain single crochet square may not answer those questions for an overlay picture blanket.
Use the measuring panel for the chosen method
Start with the panel supplied or specified by your pattern. Kathwool’s listed yarn guide uses design-specific 20 by 20 measuring panels. Choose the panel for Mosaic or Tapestry, and keep your CUT or NO-CUT method consistent with the planned blanket.
If the guide specifies how to include edges or tails in the measurement, follow it exactly. Adding an allowance to a sample that already includes it can count the same yarn twice.
Record before you measure
- Pattern and technique.
- Working method.
- Yarn name, fiber, color and length per ball.
- Hook size in millimeters.
- Sample stitch and row counts.
- Weight used for each color, measured as the guide directs.
Use a scale precise enough for the small amounts involved. If the displayed weight barely changes, the sample or measuring method may not provide a reliable basis for a large extrapolation.
Measure width and height separately
Lay the sample flat without pulling it wider. Measure the specified number of stitches across and rows vertically. Follow the yarn’s care instructions if you wash the sample, then let it dry completely before taking the final measurements.
A sample of 20 stitches and 20 rows is not necessarily a physical square. For example, 20 stitches might measure 10 cm while 20 rows measure 9 cm. Record both values; assuming they are identical changes the predicted picture proportions.
Keep the sample as a reference
Use your recorded measurements in the pattern’s size formulas and yarn worksheet. Then keep the labeled panel with the project. Check the growing blanket against it occasionally, particularly after a long break or a hook replacement.
If your first sample does not feel right, adjust one variable and make another. Changing yarn, hook and method all at once makes it difficult to understand which change helped. The Craft Yarn Council’s gauge reference also recommends working with the intended yarn, hook and stitch pattern.
A pattern to explore
Make the measuring sample specified in the pattern before calculating the size of the full motif.
