KATHWOOL JOURNAL · Updated November 2, 2026
A woodland scene or a reading cat can be interpreted in more than one crochet technique. When a Kathwool listing offers Mosaic and Tapestry versions, treat them as separate ways to make the picture. Each has its own chart and instructions.
What changes between the versions?
Kathwool’s listed Mosaic method uses single crochet and overlay double crochet. The listed Tapestry method uses carried-yarn back-loop single crochet. Those are different stitch structures, so the same apparent outline may need different color-cell arrangements.
The Autumn Reading Cat listing explains this directly: its Mosaic chart includes a cream foundation row, with the picture on rows 2–341. Its Tapestry chart has 340 rows and preserves the original color-cell layout. Mixing the Tapestry picture with the Mosaic written rows can therefore put you out of sequence.
Make a fabric decision with a sample
Rather than choosing only by a preview, consider what you enjoy doing with your hands. Do you prefer following overlay stitch placements, or managing carried yarn as the picture develops? Use the matching measuring panel for the method you intend to make.
Handle the sample, examine both sides and measure it after the care treatment you plan to use. Check that you like its weight and flexibility. Equal stitch counts do not guarantee equal finished dimensions when the structures differ.
Keep the files together, but work from one set
- Save the full download in a clearly named folder.
- Put the selected technique in your working file’s name.
- Choose CUT or NO-CUT within that technique’s instructions.
- Keep its chart, written rows and stitch key open together.
- Record the hook and yarn used for that method’s sample.
If you change your mind after sampling, start again with the other method’s complete instructions. Do not switch files simply because the next chart section looks similar.
Compare designs once the method is clear
Autumn Reading Cat suits a bookish autumn theme; Flowering Antler Deer centers a deer with flowering antlers and foliage. Both listings describe their technique options, chart dimensions and included files. Choose the scene first, then use those details to decide whether its scale fits your plans.
If you need help identifying a file, send the pattern name, technique and the page you are viewing through the contact page. This gives support something concrete to check.
