Make a crochet 3D rose with nine individual petals, a green sepal and three wired leaves. The petals are layered around a flower rod to form a rose you can display as a single stem or add to a handmade bouquet.
This free pattern explains how to crochet each part and assemble the flower. Use red, pink, white, yellow or purple yarn, or combine two similar shades to give the inner and outer petals a different look.
Find flowers to pair with your rose in our free crochet flower pattern list. For a larger floral project with downloadable charts and written instructions, see the Pink Peony C2C PDF pattern below.

Rose Colours and Gift Ideas
A handmade rose can mark a birthday, anniversary, wedding or a simple thank-you. Choose a colour the recipient enjoys, then decide whether to present one stem or make a fuller arrangement.
Using the same yarn weight across all nine petals helps the layers fit together. For a two-tone flower, try a darker shade for the small inner petals and a lighter shade for the outer petals.

Rose Bouquet Inspiration
Repeat related shades and vary the flower sizes for depth. The bouquet below offers a colour and wrapping idea; its rose shapes differ from the flower taught in this pattern.

For a mixed arrangement, combine roses with a contrasting flower shape. Try our free crochet daisy pattern or crochet tulip pattern.

Before You Start
For one complete rose, make 3 large petals, 3 medium petals, 3 small petals, 1 sepal and 3 leaves. Keep the three petal sizes in separate groups until assembly.
Prepare petal yarn, green yarn, a flower rod and wire for the leaves. Smooth yarn makes individual stitches easier to see while you work.

The tutorial photos use yellow yarn to show the petal construction. You can use your chosen flower colour with the same stitch sequence.
Materials for One Crochet Rose
- Petal yarn: light purple or your preferred flower colour. A second shade is optional.
- Green yarn: for the sepal, leaves and stem wrapping.
- Crochet hook: 2.0–2.5 mm, matched to your yarn and tension.
- Flower rod: approximately 40 cm long × 2 mm in diameter.
- Thin wire for the leaves: approximately 15 cm long × 0.4 mm in diameter for each leaf.
- Hot glue and a glue gun.
- Double-sided tape for holding the stem wrapping in place, if needed.
- Stitch markers.
- Scissors and a yarn needle for securing ends.
The pattern does not specify yarn weight, yardage or a fixed finished bloom size. Keep the yarn weight consistent across the petals and use a hook that produces a firm fabric.
Abbreviations
This pattern uses US crochet terminology.
- ch: chain.
- ss: slip stitch.
- sc: single crochet.
- hdc: half double crochet.
- dc: double crochet.
- tr: treble crochet.
- st / sts: stitch / stitches.
- inc: work 2 sc in the same stitch.
- sk: skip.
Pattern Notes
- Work the petals in joined rounds. Join with an ss to the first sc, then ch 1 where instructed.
- The joining ss and ch 1 do not count as stitches. Begin the next round in the first sc, not in the joining ss.
- Numbers in parentheses show the stitch count. The final shaped petal rounds list sc and chains separately.
- Instructions such as “sc 4” mean 1 sc in each of the next 4 stitches.
- Work every group marked “in the next st” into one stitch.
- Leave yarn tails for securing the petals and wrapping the leaf wires.
- When adding wire to a leaf, hold it along the edge and crochet over it so the stitches enclose it.

Rose Sepal — Make 1
Use green yarn and begin with a magic ring.
- Round 1: 6 sc in the ring. Join with ss, ch 1. (6 sts)
- Round 2: inc in each st around. Join with ss, ch 1. (12 sts)
- Round 3: repeat (sc 1, inc) 6 times. Join with ss, ch 1. (18 sts)
- Round 4: sc 18. Join with ss. (18 sts)

Round 5 — make six pointed sections:
- From your current anchor on the sepal base, ch 13.
- Starting in the second chain from the hook, work ss 1, sc 2, hdc 2, dc 3 and tr 4 along the chain. These stitches use all 12 available chains.
- Back on Round 4 of the sepal base, skip the next 2 sts and ss into the following st. This is the fourth stitch when the current anchor is counted as stitch 1.
- Repeat for six points. Each new anchor is three base stitches beyond the previous anchor; the final ss returns to the starting anchor.

Fasten off and secure the end. The completed sepal has six points around its base.

Rose Leaves — Make 3
Use green yarn. Begin with ch 13.
- Round 1: sc in the second chain from the hook, sc in the next 10 chains, then 3 sc in the last chain. Continue along the opposite side of the foundation: sc in the next 10 chains, then 2 sc in the starting chain, where the first sc was worked. Join with ss, ch 1. (26 sts)

- Round 2: add the wire along the edge and crochet over it. Work sc 1, hdc 1, dc 1, tr 6, dc 1, hdc 1, sc 1; work 3 sc in the next st at the tip. Continue around the other side: sc 1, hdc 1, dc 1, tr 6, dc 1, hdc 1, sc 2. Join with ss, ch 1. (28 sts)
- Round 3: sc in each st around. Join with ss. (28 sts) Fasten off, leaving a tail for wrapping the wire.

Make two more leaves. Keep the wire tails available for joining them into a small branch.
How to Assemble the Crochet Rose

1. Assemble the Leaf Branch
- Wrap each leaf's yarn tail around its exposed wire and secure it.
- Arrange the three leaves as a small branch, with one at the top and two below.
- Bring the wire stems together and wrap them with green yarn, leaving the lower section ready to attach to the main flower rod.
2. Build the Rose Centre
- Position the first small petal at the top of the flower rod and bend the rod's upper end to form an anchor.
- Apply a small amount of hot glue at the base of the petal, then curl it around the rod to form the centre.
- Add the other two small petals around the centre, overlapping their edges.
3. Add the Outer Petals
- Add all three medium petals around the small petals, spacing them evenly.
- Add all three large petals around the outside. Offset them from the joins in the previous layer.
- Adjust the petal edges before the glue sets. Secure yarn ends before trimming excess tails.
4. Attach the Sepal and Wrap the Stem
- Slide the sepal onto the rod through its centre and bring it up beneath the bloom.
- Arrange the six points against the flower base and secure them with small amounts of hot glue.
- Begin wrapping the rod with green yarn below the sepal. Use double-sided tape to hold the wrapping in place if needed.
- Position the leaf branch along the rod and continue wrapping over its wire stems to attach it.
- Wrap to the end of the rod, secure the yarn with glue and allow it to set.
Your rose is ready to arrange. Gently shape the wired leaves and space the petals to give the bloom the look you prefer.
