Crochet Calla Lily Pattern

Make an elegant flower stem with this free crochet calla lily pattern. Crochet the flower’s outer piece in one continuous shape, add a small green sepal and a narrow centre, then fold the flower around a long stem.

Materials

• Yarn: pink for the flower, white or pale cream for the centre, and green for the sepal and stem wrapping.
• Crochet hook: 2.0 mm or 2.5 mm as a starting point; choose a size that suits your yarn.
• Flower rod: approximately 40 cm long × 2 mm diameter. Use a bendable rod if following the folded-tip assembly below.
• Scissors, stitch marker and tapestry needle.
• Pliers for bending the rod.
• Hot-melt glue for securing the parts and wrapping.

The instructions make one flower, one attached sepal and one tubular centre. Repeat all three parts for additional stems. No fixed yarn quantities are specified.

Difficulty and Gauge

Confident beginner to intermediate: practise the magic ring, increases and the sc, hdc, dc and tr stitches before starting. Shaping the pointed edge and assembling the stem require additional attention.

No fixed gauge or finished size is specified. Yarn weight, hook size and tension change the flower’s size and firmness. Use a fabric that folds around the centre while keeping its shape. Check that your centre fits over the folded rod before completing the stem.

This pattern uses US crochet terminology.

• ch: chain.
• sc: single crochet.
• hdc: half double crochet.
• dc: double crochet.
• tr: treble crochet.
• ss: slip stitch.
• sk: skip.
• st / sts: stitch / stitches.
• sc inc: 2 sc in the next stitch.
• hdc inc: 2 hdc in the next stitch.
• dc inc: 2 dc in the next stitch.
• R: round.
• [number]: stitch count, excluding starting chains, joining slip stitches and the pointed edge’s chain extension.

Treble Crochet — tr

Yarn over twice, insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops three times.

Pointed Chain Extension

At the flower tip in Round 7, ch 4. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work one ss into each of the next three chains. Work the following tr into the same base stitch as the tr made before the chain. The extension creates the pointed tip without using another stitch from Round 6.

Pattern Notes

• The flower and centre use joined rounds without turning.
• Starting chains do not count as stitches. Join to the first actual stitch of each round.
• Work into the previous round’s crochet stitches, not its joining ss or starting chains.
• The green sepal is attached to the flower’s lower edge and worked in two short rows.
• Mark the first stitch of each round and check the counts before continuing.
• Leave a long tail on the sepal and centre for securing the pieces.

Free Crochet Calla Lily Pattern

Flower — Make 1

With pink yarn, make a magic ring.

• R1: work 10 sc into the ring. Tighten and ss to the first sc. [10]
• R2: ch 3, dc inc ten times. Ss to the first dc. [20]
• R3: ch 1, (3 sc, sc inc) twice, (1 sc, sc inc) twice, then (3 sc, sc inc) twice. Ss to the first sc. [26]
• R4: ch 1, (4 sc, sc inc) twice, (2 sc, sc inc) twice, then (4 sc, sc inc) twice. Ss to the first sc. [32]
• R5: ch 1, 5 sc, sc inc, (2 sc, sc inc) twice, (3 sc, sc inc) twice, (2 sc, sc inc) twice, 5 sc, sc inc. Ss to the first sc. [40]
• R6: ch 2, 6 hdc, hdc inc, (3 hdc, hdc inc) twice, (4 hdc, hdc inc) twice, (3 hdc, hdc inc) twice, then 7 hdc. Ss to the first hdc. [47]
• R7: ch 3, 7 dc, dc inc sixteen times. In the next stitch, work 1 tr, ch 4, ss back along the three chains starting in the second chain from the hook, then 1 tr in that same base stitch. Next, dc inc sixteen times, then 7 dc. Ss to the first dc. [78 dc and 2 tr = 80 sts, plus the chain extension]

Fasten off and weave in the pink yarn end. Keep a marker in the first crochet stitch of Round 7 to locate the sepal attachment area.

Count check: Round 5 contains eight sc increases. Each “sc inc” means two sc total in one stitch; do not add an extra sc before it. Round 7 uses 7 + 16 + 1 + 16 + 7 = 47 base stitches. Both tr stitches at the point go into the same base stitch.

Attached Green Sepal — Make 1

Use green yarn with the front of the flower facing you. The sepal sits at the joining area, opposite the pointed extension.

1. Identify Round 7 stitches 79, 80, 1 and 2, using the marker to locate stitch 1. These are four consecutive stitches across the round’s join.
2. Row 1: join green yarn into stitch 79, ch 2, then 2 hdc in that same stitch. Work 1 hdc into stitch 80, 1 hdc into stitch 1 and 1 hdc into stitch 2. [5 hdc]
3. Row 2: ch 2 and turn. Skip the first hdc, then work 1 hdc into each of the remaining four hdc. [4 hdc]
4. Ch 1, fasten off and leave a long tail for securing the sepal and stem wrapping.

The starting ch 2 does not count in either row. This is the adapted attachment layout described in the note above.

Flower Centre — Make 1

With white or pale cream yarn, make a magic ring.

• R1: 6 sc into the ring. Tighten and ss to the first sc. [6]
• R2–R10: ch 1, 6 sc, ss to the first sc in each round. Work nine further rounds. [6 per round]

Fasten off with a long sewing tail. The centre has ten rounds in total and remains open at the lower end so it can slide over the folded rod tip.

Assembly

1. Prepare the stem: measure about 2.5 cm from one end of the bendable rod. Fold that short section back alongside the rod with pliers, creating a rounded top and a doubled section below it.
2. Fit the centre: slide the open end of the crocheted centre over the folded rod tip. Check that it fits without forcing or stretching the stitches. Secure its lower edge to the rod with the yarn tail and a small amount of glue.
3. Position the flower: place the centre against the middle of the pink piece, with the green sepal at the bottom. Keep the pointed extension toward the top.
4. Shape the bloom: bring the two lower side edges around the centre and overlap their bases to form a cup. Adjust the fold so the centre remains visible above the front rim.
5. Secure the base: use small amounts of glue at the overlap and lower flower base. Fold the green sepal against the base and secure it. Keep the upper pink edge free to curve naturally.
6. Wrap the stem: bind the base neatly with green yarn, then continue down the rod to cover the stem. Secure the final yarn end with glue and tuck it into the wrapping.
7. Finish: weave in remaining ends and adjust the flower’s opening. Repeat the pieces for more stems.
