Colour and Arrangement Ideas
Green with cream edging highlights the leaf’s shape and contrasting stitches. Try olive with ivory, sage with white or a darker green with a lighter green border. Keep both yarns the same weight for an even edge.
Place the leaf behind the flower heads so its outline remains visible. The wire helps you adjust its curve and angle when arranging the stems.
Materials
- Yarn: green for the leaf and stem wrapping; cream or white for the edging. Use matching yarn weights.
- Crochet hook: 2.5 mm as a starting point; adjust to suit your yarn.
- Flower rod: approximately 40 cm long × 2 mm diameter.
- Craft wire: approximately 0.4 mm diameter, long enough to follow the entire leaf edge with extra length at the base for attaching to the stem.
- Stitch markers, tapestry needle and scissors.
- Hot-melt glue for securing the stem attachment and yarn wrapping.
Difficulty and Gauge
Intermediate: this project combines several stitch heights, working around a foundation chain, crocheting over wire and a contrasting spike-stitch border.
No fixed gauge or finished size is specified. Yarn weight, hook size and tension affect the leaf’s dimensions and firmness. Make one leaf before preparing several for a bouquet, and record its measurements if you want matching leaves.
Stitches and Abbreviations
This pattern uses US crochet terminology.
- ch: chain.
- ss: slip stitch.
- sc: single crochet.
- hdc: half double crochet.
- dc: double crochet.
- tr: treble crochet.
- st / sts: stitch / stitches.
- R: round.
- [number]: stitch count, excluding starting chains and joining slip stitches.
Half Double Crochet Spike Stitch
Yarn over once. Insert the hook into the indicated stitch in a lower round, yarn over and draw up a long loop to the height of the current edge. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook. Keep the long loop relaxed so it does not pull the leaf inward.
In the edging below, insert into Round 1 directly beneath the next Round 2 stitch. The spike replaces the stitch you would normally work into that Round 2 position; do not also crochet into its top loops.
Three Single Crochets in One Stitch
Work three separate sc into the same stitch. This is an increase that shapes the leaf tip; it is not a cluster stitch.
Pattern Notes
- Work around both sides of the foundation chain to form an oval. Rotate the work at the tip rather than turning it over.
- Starting chains and joining slip stitches do not count as stitches.
- Join each round with ss to its first crochet stitch. Do not work into the joining ss on the next round.
- Unless “in the same st” is stated, work one stitch into each successive stitch or chain.
- Mark the first stitch of each round and the middle stitch of the three-sc tip increase.
- In Round 2, crochet over the wire along the full perimeter. Leave both wire ends at the leaf base for attaching to the stem.
Edging adaptation — sample first: the white edging is written here as a regular repeat of 10 sc and 1 hdc spike stitch. This replaces unclear repeat wording and may differ from the spacing in the photos. The revised edging has not been test-crocheted; check its tension on one leaf before making a full set.
Step-by-Step Crochet Big Leaf Pattern
Foundation and Round 1 — Green Leaf
With green yarn, ch 50. Starting in the second chain from the hook:
- Work 3 sc, 3 hdc, 3 dc, 30 tr, 3 dc, 3 hdc and 3 sc along the first side. This uses 48 chains.
- Work 3 sc in the last remaining chain. Mark the middle sc as the leaf tip.
- Rotate the work and crochet into the unused loops on the opposite side of the foundation chain: 3 sc, 3 hdc, 3 dc, 30 tr, 3 dc, 3 hdc and 3 sc.
- Join with ss to the first sc. [99 sts]
The stitch count is 48 along the first side, 3 at the tip and 48 along the opposite side.
Round 2 — Wired Outer Round
Ch 1. Place the wire along the edge and crochet over it while working into the stitches of Round 1:
- Work 6 sc, 6 hdc, 3 dc, 20 tr, 3 dc, 6 hdc and 5 sc. These 49 stitches include the first sc of Round 1’s three-sc tip increase.
- Work 3 sc in the marked middle tip stitch. Move the tip marker to the middle of these three new sc.
- Continue around the other side: 5 sc, 6 hdc, 3 dc, 20 tr, 3 dc, 6 hdc and 6 sc.
- Join with ss to the first sc. Fasten off, leaving a long green tail for assembly. [101 sts]
This round uses all 99 stitches below. The tip increase adds two stitches: 49 + 3 + 49 = 101. Both wire ends should finish at the leaf base.
Round 3 — Contrasting Edging
Join cream or white yarn to the first stitch of Round 2 at the leaf base. Ch 1.
- Repeat (10 sc, 1 hdc spike stitch) nine times. Work the sc into the next Round 2 stitches. For each spike, work into Round 1 directly beneath the next Round 2 stitch, then leave that Round 2 stitch’s top loops unworked.
- Work 1 sc into each of the final 2 Round 2 stitches.
- Join with ss to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in the cream tail. [101 sts: 92 sc and 9 hdc spike stitches]
The nine repeats cover 99 positions, followed by two final stitches. Avoid pulling the spikes tightly; the leaf should lie flat without a puckered border.
Attach the Leaf to a Long Stem
Keep the central foundation chain visible on the front of the leaf. The rod sits behind the leaf, supporting its lower central section and extending below it as the stem.
- Prepare the base: bring the two edging-wire ends together at the leaf base. Bend any exposed sharp ends inward and use the green tail to bind the wire neatly.
- Prepare the rod: cover the upper section of the flower rod with green yarn. Test its position behind the leaf before fixing it in place.
- Attach the leaf: position the wrapped rod along the back of the central chain, with its upper end below the leaf tip. Apply a small amount of glue at the supporting contact points and let it set. Bind the leaf’s wire tails to the rod at the base with green yarn.
- Finish the stem: continue wrapping green yarn down the rod, covering the wire and join. Secure the final yarn end with a small amount of glue. Gently shape the leaf once the glue has cooled.
Make a Coordinated Crochet Bouquet
Use one large leaf behind a flower head, or place two or three leaves at different heights around the arrangement. Pair the greenery with crochet Thai roses or crochet daisies. Repeat the same green yarn across stems and leaves for a coordinated finish.
