Crochet Thai Rose

Crochet Thai Rose

Make a layered flower with this free crochet Thai rose pattern. Crochet the petals in three sizes, then assemble them around a stem to create a curled centre and a fuller outer bloom. A green sepal cup and two wired leaves complete the flower.

This rose uses 4 small petals, 4 medium petals and 5 large petals — 13 petals in total. Try dark pink at the centre, light pink in the middle and cream on the outside, or use a single colour throughout.

Pair your rose with other designs from our free crochet flower pattern collection. For a separate project you can save and follow offline, explore our flower and botanical PDF patterns.

Colour and Bouquet Ideas

Changing colour between petal layers makes the rose’s construction more visible. A darker centre with pale outer petals gives a soft gradient; using the same shade for all 13 petals creates a more uniform bloom.

The bouquets below offer ideas for combining roses with smaller flowers and greenery. They contain several flower designs and are arrangement references rather than a list of pieces included in this pattern.

Ways to Use Your Crochet Rose

  • Single-stem gifts: display one finished rose in a small vase or wrap the stem for a handmade gift.
  • Rose arrangements: repeat the design in related colours and vary the position of the outer petals.
  • Mixed bouquets: combine the rose with daisies, sunflowers or baby’s breath.

Add larger greenery with our crochet big leaf pattern if you want to frame a fuller bouquet.

Materials

  • Yarn: dark pink for the small petals, light pink for the medium petals, cream for the large petals and green for the sepal and leaves. Substitute your preferred colours.
  • Crochet hook: 2.5 mm as a starting point; adjust to suit your yarn.
  • Flower rod: approximately 40 cm long × 2 mm diameter.
  • Craft wire: approximately 0.4–0.5 mm diameter, for the two leaves.
  • Stitch marker, tapestry needle and scissors.
  • Hot-melt glue for attaching the petal bases and securing the stem wrapping.

Use the same yarn weight for all petal colours so the layers remain proportionate. Choose a fabric that holds its shape without becoming difficult to fold. No fixed yarn quantity is established for this pattern.

Difficulty and Gauge

Advanced intermediate: this project combines joined rounds, increases, several stitch heights, decorative edging and layered assembly. Make one petal in each size before preparing the full set.

No fixed gauge or finished flower size is specified. Yarn weight, hook size and tension will change the size and firmness of the rose.

Stitches and Abbreviations

This pattern uses US crochet terminology.

  • ch: chain.
  • ss: slip stitch.
  • sc: single crochet.
  • hdc: half double crochet.
  • dc: double crochet.
  • tr: treble crochet.
  • st / sts: stitch / stitches.
  • sk: skip.
  • R: round.
  • [number]: stitch count, excluding starting chains, joining slip stitches and decorative chains.

Three-Chain Picot Used in This Version

After the indicated stitch, ch 3 and work ss into the base of those three chains, at the top of the stitch just completed. This makes a small point without using another stitch from the previous round.

The picot is added after a dc at the large petal’s tip and after a sc at the leaf’s tip. It does not add another sc to the round.

Pattern Notes

  • Make 4 small petals, 4 medium petals, 5 large petals, 1 sepal cup and 2 leaves.
  • The petals and sepal cup are worked in joined rounds, without turning.
  • Starting chains do not count as stitches. Join each round with ss to its first crochet stitch.
  • Work into the crochet stitches of the previous round, not into starting chains or joining slip stitches.
  • The leaves are worked along both sides of a foundation chain, then edged in a second round.
  • In this pattern, “2 hdc in the next st” means an increase in one stitch. “2 hdc” means one hdc in each of the next two stitches.
  • Leave yarn tails for sewing, securing and wrapping during assembly.

Count correction — sample first: the large petal’s final round uses 7 sc at each end to fit the 30 stitches below. The picot and leaf edging are also made explicit in this written version. These revisions have not been test-crocheted; check one large petal and one leaf before making the full set.

Step-by-Step Crochet Thai Rose Pattern

1. Small Petals — Make 4

Use dark pink yarn. Begin with a magic ring.

  1. R1: ch 3, work 10 dc into the ring. Tighten the ring and join with ss to the first dc. [10]
  2. R2: ch 2, work 2 hdc in each of the 10 sts. Join with ss to the first hdc. [20]
  3. R3: ch 1, work 6 sc; work 2 hdc in each of the next 8 sts; work 6 sc. Join with ss to the first sc. [28]

Fasten off, leaving a tail for securing the petal base. Repeat to make four small petals.

2. Medium Petals — Make 4

Use light pink yarn. Begin with a magic ring.

  1. R1: ch 3, work 10 dc into the ring. Tighten and join with ss to the first dc. [10]
  2. R2: ch 2, work 2 hdc in each st around. Join with ss. [20]
  3. R3: ch 1, work 2 sc; repeat (1 sc, 2 sc in the next st) 8 times; work 2 sc. Join with ss. [28]
  4. R4: ch 1, work 9 sc; work 2 hdc in each of the next 10 sts; work 9 sc. Join with ss. [38]

Fasten off and leave a tail. Make four medium petals.

3. Large Petals — Make 5

Use cream yarn. Begin with a magic ring.

  1. R1: ch 3, work 10 dc into the ring. Tighten and join with ss to the first dc. [10]
  2. R2: ch 2, work 2 hdc in each st around. Join with ss. [20]
  3. R3: ch 2, repeat (1 hdc, 2 hdc in the next st) 10 times. Join with ss. [30]
  4. R4: ch 1. Work the following sequence, then join with ss to the first sc:
    1. Work 7 sc.
    2. Work 2 hdc in each of the next 6 sts.
    3. Work 1 hdc in the next st and 1 dc in the following st.
    4. Make a three-chain picot at the top of that dc, without advancing to another stitch.
    5. Work 1 dc in the next st and 1 hdc in the following st.
    6. Work 2 hdc in each of the next 6 sts.
    7. Work 7 sc. [42 crochet stitches, plus the picot chains]

Count check: the final round uses 7 + 6 + 2 + 2 + 6 + 7 = 30 stitches from R3. The twelve hdc increases produce a total of 42 crochet stitches. The picot does not consume another base stitch.

Fasten off and leave a tail. Make five large petals.

4. Sepal Cup — Make 1

Use green yarn. Begin with a magic ring, leaving a small central opening for the flower rod.

  1. R1: ch 1, work 6 sc into the ring and join with ss. [6]
  2. R2: ch 1, work 2 sc in each st around and join with ss. [12]
  3. R3: ch 1, repeat (1 sc, 2 sc in the next st) 6 times and join with ss. [18]
  4. R4: ch 1, work 18 sc and join with ss. [18]
  5. R5 — six points: ch 9. Starting in the second ch from the hook, work 2 ss, 1 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc and 1 tr, placing one stitch in each of the eight available chains. Back on the cup edge, sk the next 2 sts and work ss in the following st. Repeat this entire sequence 6 times.

The six points each use three stitches of the 18-stitch cup edge: two skipped stitches and one slip-stitch anchor. Fasten off after the final anchor, leaving a green tail for assembly. This is one cup with six attached points.

5. Wired Leaves — Make 2

Use green yarn. Prepare a piece of thin wire to follow both edges of the leaf, leaving wire tails at its base. Crochet over the wire during R1.

Foundation: ch 12.

  1. R1, first side: starting in the second ch from the hook, work 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 3 tr, 2 dc and 1 hdc, placing one stitch in each of the first 10 available chains.
  2. Tip: work 3 sc in the last foundation chain.
  3. R1, second side: rotate the leaf and work into the unused side of the chain: 1 hdc, 2 dc, 3 tr, 2 dc and 1 hdc, then work 2 sc in the same last remaining chain position at the base. Join with ss to the first sc. [24]
  4. R2, first half: ch 1 and work 1 sc in the first st. Repeat (ch 2, 1 sc in the next st) 11 times. You have now worked 12 sc; the last one is in the middle stitch of the three-sc tip.
  5. Tip picot: ch 3 and work ss into the base of those chains, at the top of the sc just made.
  6. R2, second half: repeat (ch 2, 1 sc in the next st) 12 times. Ch 2 and join with ss to the first sc to complete the last edging loop. [24 sc, 24 ch-2 loops, plus the tip picot]

Fasten off, leaving a tail to wrap the wire tails. Make a second leaf in the same way.

Leaf count check: R1 has 10 stitches on the first side, 3 at the tip and 11 on the second side. The final pair of sc shares one chain position, giving 24 stitches around the leaf.

Assemble the Crochet Thai Rose

Dark pink small petals, light pink medium petals, cream large petals, two green leaves and a sepal cup before assembly
Prepare all 13 petals, one sepal cup and two leaves before assembling the flower.

1. Form the Inner Rose

  1. Identify the base of each small petal: the section near the starting and finishing tails, opposite the wider curved edge.
  2. Wrap the first small petal closely around the top of the flower rod to form the curled centre. Secure its base with a small amount of glue.
  3. Add the remaining three small petals one at a time, overlapping their sides and keeping their bases at a similar height.
  4. Attach glue only at the lower part of each petal so the upper edges remain free to shape.

2. Add the Medium and Large Petals

  1. Position the four medium petals around the inner rose, slightly overlapping the previous petal as you work around the flower.
  2. Secure each petal at its base and check that the centre remains visible.
  3. Add the five large petals as the outer layer. Stagger them around the gaps between the medium petals rather than aligning all the layers.
  4. Keep the picot tips at the top of the large petals. Adjust the overlap to create a balanced outer bloom.
  5. Let the glue cool, then sew or weave in any loose tails at the underside before trimming them.

3. Attach the Sepal Cup

  1. Slide the lower end of the flower rod through the central opening of the sepal cup and move the cup up to the underside of the rose.
  2. Position the six points evenly around the flower base, with the tips curving outward.
  3. Secure the cup to the petal bases with a small amount of glue or stitches using the green tail.

4. Wrap the Stem and Add the Leaves

  1. Secure green yarn beneath the sepal cup and begin wrapping it closely around the flower rod.
  2. A few centimetres below the flower, position the two leaves on opposite sides of the stem. Place their wire tails alongside the rod.
  3. Bind the leaf wire tails to the rod with green yarn, then continue wrapping over the attachments.
  4. Cover the wire ends and continue to the bottom of the rod. Secure the final yarn end with a small amount of glue and let it cool.
  5. Shape the leaves gently and adjust the outer petals to finish your rose.

Make one complete rose before preparing multiple stems. Check the petal sizes, sepal fit and leaf edging, then use the same yarn and tension for a matching bouquet.
