Crochet Forget Me Not Flower

This free crochet forget-me-not flower pattern makes small five-petal flowers with yellow centres, wired leaves and a wrapped stem. Use the flowers individually as appliqués, or assemble seven blooms into a branch for a handmade bouquet.

Ways to Use Your Crochet Forget-me-nots

• Small vase arrangements: display one branch or combine several in related colours.

Materials

• Yarn: light and dark pink for the flowers, yellow for the centres and green for leaves and stem wrapping. Substitute your preferred petal colours.
• Crochet hook: 2.5 mm as a starting point; adjust to suit your yarn.
• Main flower rod: approximately 40 cm long × 2 mm diameter.
• Craft wire: approximately 0.4–0.5 mm diameter. Prepare seven 15 cm pieces for the flower centres and separate lengths for the three leaves. Each leaf wire must follow its full perimeter with extra length at the base for attachment.
• Stitch markers, tapestry needle and scissors.
• Pliers or suitable wire-bending tools, and wire cutters if needed.
• Hot-melt glue for securing the final stem wrapping.

Advanced intermediate: the crochet stitches are basic, but the small pieces, wrapped wire centres and branch assembly require careful handling.

No fixed gauge or finished size is specified. Yarn, hook size and tension affect the dimensions. Make one flower, centre and leaf before preparing all the pieces.

Stitches and Pattern Notes

This pattern uses US crochet terminology.

• ch: chain.
• ss: slip stitch.
• sc: single crochet.
• hdc: half double crochet.
• dc: double crochet.
• st / sts: stitch / stitches.
• R: round.

Pattern Notes

• For one branch, make 7 flowers, 7 yellow wire-wrapped centres and 3 leaves.
• Each flower has a five-sc base and one petal in each base stitch.
• Starting chains and joining slip stitches do not count as base stitches.
• Work the flowers in joined rounds without turning.
• For a stemmed flower, keep a small centre opening for the wrapped wire. Tighten it around the stem during assembly.
• The leaves are worked along both sides of a foundation chain, with wire held along the perimeter.
• Unless “in the same st” is stated, work one crochet stitch into each successive stitch or chain.

Flowers — Make 7

With your chosen petal colour, make a magic ring and ch 1.

Round 1: work 5 sc into the ring. Join with ss to the first sc. Gather the ring, leaving a small opening for the stem. [5 sc]

Round 2: work one petal into each of the five sc from Round 1:

1. From the first sc, ch 3, work 2 dc into that same sc, ch 3 and ss into the same sc. This makes the first petal.
2. Ss into the next sc to move to the next petal position. Ch 3, work 2 dc into that sc, ch 3 and ss into the same sc.
3. Repeat Step 2 three more times to use all five base stitches.
4. Check that you have 5 petals, with 2 dc in each petal. Ch 1, fasten off and weave in the working end.

Keep the magic-ring tail available until the wired centre is fitted. For an appliqué, close the ring fully and embroider a small yellow centre instead.

Yellow Centres — Make 7

1. Take a wire approximately 15 cm long. Starting about 5 cm from one end, wrap a 2.5 cm section tightly with yellow yarn.
2. Bend the yellow-covered section into a small circular loop, bringing the two ends of that covered section together. The two unwrapped wire tails extend behind the loop.
3. Keep the yellow loop flat and round. Bind the two wire tails together immediately behind it with green yarn, wrapping approximately 2.5 cm down the doubled wire.
4. Secure the green yarn temporarily. Finish wrapping the remaining wire after fitting the flower.

The yellow-covered section forms the visible ring, rather than a long straight stamen. Adjust its shape against one crocheted flower before preparing the remaining centres.

Leaves — Make 3

With green yarn, ch 16. Hold the leaf wire alongside the stitches as you work around both sides of the chain.

1. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 1 sc, 1 hdc, 9 dc, 2 hdc and 1 sc. This uses 14 chains.
2. Work 3 sc in the final remaining chain to form the tip.
3. Rotate the work and crochet into the unused loops on the opposite side: 1 sc, 2 hdc, 9 dc, 1 hdc and 1 sc.
4. Join with ss to the first sc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for stem wrapping. [31 sts]
5. Bring both wire ends together at the leaf base. Bind them with the green tail and wrap the leaf stem, covering the wire neatly.

The leaf count is 14 stitches on the first side, 3 at the tip and 14 on the opposite side. There is no second leaf round in this pattern.

Assemble Your Forget-me-not Branch

Fit the Centres and Finish the Flower Stems

1. Feed the two wire tails through the flower’s centre from the front, so the yellow loop rests flat against the petals.
2. Tighten the magic-ring tail gently around the wrapped stem, then secure and weave it in.
3. Use green yarn to bind the flower base to the stem directly underneath. Continue wrapping the doubled wire, covering any exposed metal.
4. Secure the wrapping and leave enough stem length to bind the flower to the main rod.
5. Repeat for all seven flowers.

Prepare the Leaf Group

Bring the three wrapped leaf stems together at their bases. Bind them with green yarn, leaving the leaves free to fan outward. Keep enough wire length below the group for attaching it to the main rod.

Join the Flowers and Leaves to the Main Rod

1. Position the first flower near the top of the rod. Lay its wire stem alongside the rod and bind it firmly with green yarn.
2. Continue wrapping downward, adding the other flowers one at a time. Space the attachment points approximately 1.3 cm apart, adjusting the spacing and side-stem angles to suit the finished flower sizes.
3. Alternate the flowers around the rod so they remain visible rather than sitting directly behind one another.
4. Attach the three-leaf group beneath the flowers and bind its wire stems securely to the rod.
5. Continue wrapping to the bottom of the rod. Cover the joins and wire ends, then secure the final yarn end with a small amount of glue.
6. Once the glue has cooled, gently spread the flowers and fan the leaves into position.
