Crochet Corn Poppy Flower- Free Pattern

Crochet Corn Poppy Flower- Free Pattern

Make a crochet corn poppy with four ruffled petals, a small contrasting centre, a flower bud and wired green leaves. This free written tutorial covers the separate pieces and how to assemble them into a decorative stem.

Pink crochet corn poppy with a separate bud branch

Use your poppy as a single-flower display or combine it with other handmade blooms. Our free crochet flower and leaf pattern directory brings the tutorials together in one place.

Before you start: This is an intermediate project. The petals combine turned rows with edging around the sides and base. Make one petal first before making all four. For a separate floral blanket project, explore our downloadable flower and botanical crochet PDF patterns.

Bouquet and Display Ideas

A poppy can be a focal flower in a vase arrangement or a handmade gift bouquet. Pair it with small crochet roses, crochet tulips and greenery. Leave enough space around the ruffled petals to show their shape.

The bouquet above is a styling reference. Follow the individual flower tutorials to make the pieces you want to include, then arrange them at different heights.

Materials

Yarn and tools for a crochet corn poppy
  • Yarn: pink or your chosen flower colour for the petals and bud, green for the leaves, flower base and stem wrapping, and cream or light yellow for the small stamen loops. The example uses a green centre with pale loops.
  • Crochet hook: 2.0 mm as a starting point; adjust for your yarn and tension.
  • Wire: 0.5 mm and 0.7 mm floral wire for shaping and supporting the pieces.
  • A flower rod for the main stem.
  • A small amount of fibre fill for the bud.
  • Scissors, tapestry needle, stitch marker, pliers and wire cutters.
  • Hot glue and a glue gun for assembly.

Choose yarn that gives firm but workable stitches. Cover all cut wire ends and handle hot glue carefully.

Stitches and Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • ss: slip stitch
  • st / sts: stitch / stitches
  • sk: skip
  • inc: work 2 sc in the same stitch
  • sc2tog: single crochet two stitches together; a decrease
  • [ ]: stitch count where provided

Single Crochet Two Together: sc2tog

Insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Insert the hook into the following stitch, yarn over and pull up another loop. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook. Two stitches have become one.

Treble Crochet: tr

Yarn over twice, insert the hook into the indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops three times to complete the stitch.

Picot Edging

The main leaf uses alternating ch-2 and ch-3 picots. After making the specified chains, slip stitch into the back bump of the first chain of that small chain group to form the point.

Gauge and Pattern Notes

No fixed gauge is required for this decorative flower. Yarn weight, hook size and tension affect the finished size. Use the same yarn and hook for all four petals.

  • This tutorial uses US crochet terminology.
  • Sc 3 means one single crochet in each of the next three stitches. 2 sc in the next stitch means both stitches go into that one stitch.
  • Starting chains and joining slip stitches do not count in the totals given below.
  • The petal instructions use numbered steps because later steps include both a top row and side edging.
  • For the centre and bud, join each round with ss to the first stitch and ch 1 where instructed.
  • For wired leaves, rotate the piece at the chain tip and work along the opposite side of the foundation chain.

Ruffled Petals — Make 4

  1. Step 1: make a magic ring and work 5 sc into it. Tighten the ring but do not join with a slip stitch. [5 sc]
  2. Step 2: ch 1 and turn. Work 2 sc in each of the 5 stitches. [10 sc]
  3. Step 3: ch 2 and turn. Dc 10. [10 dc]
  4. Step 4: turn and ch 2. Dc 4, work 2 dc in each of the next 3 stitches, dc 3. [13 dc]
  5. Step 5 — top row: turn and ch 2. Dc 3, work 2 dc in each of the next 6 stitches, dc 4. [19 dc across the top]
Continue around the sides and base: ch 3, dc 2, hdc 2, sc 3, work 2 sc in the next stitch, sc 3, hdc 2, dc 2. These are edging stitches, separate from the 19 top-row stitches.
  6. Step 6 — top row: work 4 dc in the first top-row stitch, dc 17, and 4 dc in the last top-row stitch; ss to connect the edge. [25 dc across the top]
Wired side edging: ch 3 and position the wire around the petal edge. Work dc 2, hdc 2, sc 3, 2 sc in the next stitch, 2 sc in the following stitch, sc 3, hdc 2, dc 2. Keep the wire enclosed by the edging stitches.
  7. Step 7 — ruffled top: work 2 dc in each of the first 4 top-row stitches, 3 dc in each of the next 17 stitches, and 2 dc in each of the last 4 stitches. Keep enclosing the wire along the outer edge. Finish with ss. [67 dc along the ruffled top]

The top-row counts apply only to that section, not to the entire petal perimeter. The side edging is worked along the sides and base of the piece rather than across the top row.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for assembly. Leave enough wire at the base to attach the petal, then cover the ends when assembling the flower.

Continue around the leaf, working into the crochet stitches rather than counting the tip chain as an extra stitch. Join with ss.

Fasten off and wrap the exposed base wire with green yarn. Gently shape the leaf.

Assemble the Crochet Corn Poppy

Prepare four petals, one centre, one flower sepal, one stuffed bud, two bud covering leaves, one main stem leaf, the flower rod, wire, green wrapping yarn and glue.

Steps 1–2: Join the Four Petals

Position two petals opposite each other and tie their bases securely with the yarn tails. Place the other two underneath and between the first pair to create an open, layered bloom. Stitch or tie the bases together and secure the ends with a small amount of glue.

Step 3: Attach the Flower Centre

Position the centre on the front of the flower, with the pale loops visible around it. Secure it with its yarn tail and a small amount of glue.

Step 4: Assemble the Separate Bud Branch

Place the two green covering leaves on opposite sides of the stuffed bud, curving them around it. Secure their bases and wire to the bud support. Wrap this short branch with green yarn, leaving enough length to attach it beside the main flower stem.

The bud is a separate side branch, not part of the open flower's centre.

Step 5: Add the Flower Sepal

Place the five-point sepal beneath the open flower. Secure it around the petal bases with its yarn tail and a small amount of glue.

Step 6: Finish the Main Stem

Attach the flower securely to the flower rod using the petal base wires and yarn tails. Begin wrapping with green yarn, covering the attachments. Add the bud branch and main leaf at your chosen heights, secure them to the rod, and continue wrapping to the end.

Cover all cut wire ends, secure the wrapping yarn, and gently adjust the flower, bud and leaf positions.

Colour and Finishing Ideas

Try blush pink for a soft arrangement, orange for a warm palette, or red for a stronger colour accent. Repeat some of the flower colours elsewhere in the bouquet to bring the pieces together.

Remove surface dust with a soft brush. Consider the yarn care instructions and the wire, stuffing and glue before cleaning the finished flower.
