Make a crochet gerbera flower with two layers of long petals, a textured centre and a shaped green leaf. This written pattern covers the separate components and shows how to assemble them into a decorative flower stem.
Use your gerbera as a single-stem display or combine it with other flowers from our free crochet flower pattern collection.
For floral projects you can follow from downloadable charts and written rows, explore our botanical crochet PDF patterns. A C2C blanket recommendation is included at the end of this tutorial.
Gerbera Colour and Bouquet Ideas
Sky blue petals with a yellow-and-white centre create a soft colour combination. Try pink, cream, yellow or orange petals for a different mood, keeping some contrast between the petals and centre.
Cool Blue and White
Combine blue gerberas with white flowers and green foliage for a fresh arrangement. Vary the flower sizes and stem heights to give each bloom room to show.
Warm Red and Orange
A warm palette brings a different character to the same flower shape. Mix red, orange and golden tones, or make several gerberas in related shades.
For handmade combinations, try our sunflower, 3D rose, tulip or daisy tutorials.
Prepare Your Project
Gather your own supplies before starting. Make one flower core, one two-layer petal base, one green flower holder and one leaf for each stem.
Choose Your Yarn
Use a smooth yarn that makes the stitch positions easy to see. Choose colours for the core, decorative centre loops, petals and green parts. Keep the yarn weight consistent across the components.
Materials
- Yarn in four colours: yellow for the core, white for the decorative centre loops, sky blue for the petals and green for the holder, leaf and stem; substitute your preferred colours
- A 2.5 mm crochet hook, or a size suited to your yarn
- A flower rod approximately 40 cm long and 2 mm in diameter
- Flexible craft wire approximately 0.5–0.7 mm in diameter for shaping the petals and leaf
- A small amount of fiberfill
- Stitch markers
- Scissors and wire cutters
- A tapestry needle
- Hot glue and a glue gun for assembly
Skill Level and Gauge
This is an intermediate crochet project. You should be comfortable with joined rounds, increases, front-loop and back-loop work, treble crochet, decorative edging and assembling wired flower components.
No specific gauge is required. Yarn weight, hook size and tension affect the finished dimensions and firmness. Check that the flower holder fits behind the petal base before sewing the pieces together.
More Colour Inspiration
The arrangement below shows how contrasting centres and a mix of petal colours can work together. Use it as inspiration for flowers you make yourself.
Stitches and Abbreviations
This pattern uses US crochet terminology.
- ch: chain
- st / sts: stitch / stitches
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- tr: treble crochet
- ss: slip stitch
- sk: skip
- FLO: front loop only
- BLO: back loop only
- inc: work 2 sc in the same stitch
- picot: a decorative chain loop
- [number]: stitch count at the end of a round
Special Techniques
- FLO: Insert your hook through only the front loop of the stitch. In the petal base, this leaves the back loop available for the second layer.
- BLO: Insert your hook through only the back loop. In the core, this leaves front loops available for the decorative centre loops.
- Two-chain picot: Ch 2, then ss into the first of those two chains.
- Three-chain picot: Ch 3, then ss into the first of those three chains.
- Crocheting around wire: Hold the wire along the edge and work the edging stitches around it, keeping it covered by the yarn.
Pattern Notes
- Join each ordinary round with 1 ss to its first stitch. Ch 1 before the next sc round unless instructed otherwise.
- Joining slip stitches and starting chains do not count towards the stated sc totals.
- Work through both loops unless FLO or BLO is specified.
- Keep the flower core and petal base separate until assembly.
- The petal base has 24 stitches. Each layer contains 12 petals spaced two base stitches apart.
- In the leaf edging, each parenthesised group is worked in one stitch. Move to the next stitch for the following instruction.
- Leave sewing tails where indicated, and cover the wire ends during assembly.
Step 1: Crochet the Flower Core
Use your chosen core colour.
- R1: Make a magic ring and work 6 sc into it. Tighten the ring, join and ch 1. [6]
- R2: Work 2 sc in each st around. Join and ch 1. [12]
- R3: Working in BLO, repeat (1 sc, inc) 6 times. Join and ch 1. [18]
- R4: Working in BLO, repeat (1 sc, inc, 1 sc) 6 times. Join and fasten off, leaving a sewing tail. [24]
Add the Decorative Centre Loops
Use the decorative centre colour. These are surface loops worked onto the core, rather than three new rounds that increase its stitch count.
- Inner ring: Join yarn to a remaining front loop of core R2. Work (1 ss in the next front loop, ch 2) around all 12 front loops. Join to the starting point and fasten off. This makes 12 chain loops.
- Middle ring: Repeat the same method in the 18 remaining front loops of core R3. This makes 18 chain loops.
- Outer ring: Repeat the same method in the 24 front loops of core R4. This makes 24 chain loops.
Work one chain loop at each anchor without skipping an anchor. The rings contain 24, 36 and 48 chains respectively; those numbers are chain totals, not new core stitch counts.
Step 2: Crochet the Petal Base
Use your petal colour.
- R1: Make a magic ring and work 6 sc into it. Join and ch 1. [6]
- R2: Work 2 sc in each st around. Join and ch 1. [12]
- R3: Repeat (1 sc, inc) 6 times. Join and ch 1. [18]
- R4: Repeat (1 sc, inc, 1 sc) 6 times. Join and ch 1. [24]
- R5: Work 24 sc through both loops. Join. [24]
First Layer: 12 Shorter Petals
Work this layer in the front loops of petal-base R5. Leave its back loops available for the second layer.
- From your current position, ch 13.
- Starting in the third chain from the hook, work 11 sc back down the chain towards the base.
- Work 1 ss in the next front loop of R5, then 1 ss in the following front loop. This advances two base stitches.
- Repeat these steps 12 times in total, returning to the starting position after the final pair of slip stitches. Fasten off.
Wire and Shape the Shorter Petals
For each petal, join yarn at its base and work around both sides of its narrow crocheted spine, enclosing flexible wire as you go.
- First side: 2 sc, 2 hdc, 6 dc and 1 hdc, using one edge position for each stitch.
- Tip: In the two-chain space left at the tip, work (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc).
- Return side: 1 hdc, 6 dc, 2 hdc and 2 sc along the opposite side.
Each side uses 11 edge positions. The tip has its own chain space. Secure the yarn at the base, weave in the end and keep the wire ends covered beneath the flower.
Second Layer: 12 Longer Petals
Join the petal-coloured yarn to the remaining back loops of petal-base R5.
- Ch 15.
- Starting in the third chain from the hook, work 13 sc back down the chain.
- Work 1 ss in each of the next two back loops of R5.
- Repeat these steps 12 times in total. Fasten off.
Wire and Shape the Longer Petals
- First side: 2 sc, 2 hdc, 8 dc and 1 hdc, using one edge position for each stitch.
- Tip: In the two-chain tip space, work (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc).
- Return side: 1 hdc, 8 dc, 2 hdc and 2 sc.
Each side uses 13 edge positions. Secure and cover the wire ends at the base. Arrange the shorter petals above the longer petals, staggering their positions when shaping the finished flower.
Step 3: Crochet the Green Flower Holder
Use green yarn. This cup fits beneath the petal base and covers the stem attachment.
- R1: Make a magic ring and work 6 sc into it. Join and ch 1. [6]
- R2–R3: Work 6 sc around each round. Join and ch 1. [6 each round]
- R4: Work 2 sc in each st. Join and ch 1. [12]
- R5: Repeat (1 sc, inc) 6 times. Join and ch 1. [18]
- R6: Repeat (1 sc, inc, 1 sc) 6 times. Join and ch 1. [24]
- R7: Repeat (3 sc, inc) 6 times. Join and ch 1. [30]
- R8: Work 30 sc. Join. [30]
- R9: Repeat (sk 1 st; in the next st work 1 dc, a two-chain picot and 1 dc; 1 ss in the next st) 10 times. Fasten off, leaving a long sewing tail.
Each R9 repeat uses three stitches of R8, creating 10 decorative points around the 30-stitch rim.
Step 4: Crochet the Leaf
Use green yarn.
R1: Foundation
Ch 31.
R2: Work Around the Chain
Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 29 sc, then 2 sc in the final chain. Rotate the piece and work 29 sc along the unused side of the foundation chain. Join and ch 1. [60 sc]
R3: Shape the Leaf and Add Wire
Hold the wire along the edge and crochet around it.
- Along the first 30 stitches: 6 sc, 4 hdc, 3 dc, 4 tr, 3 dc, 4 hdc and 6 sc.
- Ch 1 at the tip.
- Along the other 30 stitches: 6 sc, 4 hdc, 3 dc, 4 tr, 3 dc, 4 hdc and 6 sc.
- Join with 1 ss and ch 1.
R3 has 60 stitches plus the separate ch-1 tip space.
R4: First Side of the Leaf Edging
Work the following sequence over the first 30 stitches. Each grouped instruction uses one stitch; ungrouped stitches are worked in successive stitches.
- 4 sc, then 1 hdc.
- In the next st: (1 hdc, 1 dc, three-chain picot).
- In the next st: (1 dc, 1 hdc), then 1 sc and 1 hdc in the next two stitches.
- In the next st: (1 dc, 1 tr, three-chain picot).
- In the next st: (1 tr, 1 dc), then 1 hdc, 1 sc and 1 hdc in the next three stitches.
- In the next st: (1 dc, 1 tr).
- In the next st: (1 dc, 1 tr, three-chain picot, 1 dc, 1 tr).
- In the next st: (1 tr, 1 dc), then 1 hdc and 2 sc in the next three stitches.
- In the next st: (1 hdc, 1 dc, three-chain picot).
- In the next st: (1 dc, 1 hdc), then 1 hdc and 7 sc in the next eight stitches.
Leaf Tip
Ch 2 and work 1 sc in the second chain from the hook to form the tip extension. Continue onto the other side, leaving the ch-1 tip space from R3 unworked.
R4: Second Side of the Leaf Edging
Work over the remaining 30 stitches:
- 7 sc, then 1 hdc.
- In the next st: (1 hdc, 1 dc, three-chain picot).
- In the next st: (1 dc, 1 hdc), then 2 sc and 1 hdc in the next three stitches.
- In the next st: (1 dc, 1 tr).
- In the next st: (1 tr, 1 dc, three-chain picot, 1 tr, 1 dc).
- In the next st: (1 tr, 1 dc), then 1 hdc, 1 sc and 1 hdc in the next three stitches.
- In the next st: (1 dc, 1 tr, three-chain picot).
- In the next st: (1 tr, 1 dc), then 1 hdc and 1 sc in the next two stitches.
- In the next st: (1 hdc, 1 dc, three-chain picot).
- In the next st: (1 dc, 1 hdc), then 1 hdc and 4 sc in the next five stitches.
Join with 1 ss to the first stitch of the edging. Fasten off, leaving a tail for wrapping the wire at the leaf base. Each side contains four three-chain picots.
Step 5: Assemble the Gerbera
- Attach the centre: Position the decorated core over the petal base. Sew it in place or secure it with a small amount of hot glue.
- Prepare the stem: Bend the top end of the flower rod to form an anchor. Pass the rod through the bottom centre of the green holder so the bent end sits inside the cup.
- Attach the holder: Use its yarn tail to sew the rim beneath the petal base. Before closing the opening, add a small amount of fiberfill around the stem anchor, then finish sewing.
- Wrap the stem: Secure green yarn below the flower holder and wrap it closely around the rod.
- Add the leaf: Place the leaf wire against the rod and continue wrapping over both pieces until the leaf is secure.
- Finish: Cover the wire ends, secure the yarn end with a small amount of glue and gently shape the petals and leaf.
